As a licensed electrician in Apex, we receive calls every day from homeowners who just purchased a hot tub or swim spa and they need the electrical portion hooked up.
If you don’t take the time to understand the requirements of putting a hot tub or swim spa in your yard, the joy and excitement of a new backyard oasis can quickly turn into a very stressful and time-consuming endeavor.
The good news is that if you plan accordingly, you’ll have the peace of mind you are looking for. You’ll be relaxing (or swimming) in your hot tub (or swim spa) on the day of delivery.
I Just Bought a Hot Tub, Now What?
Step 1: Pull a permit with your local municipality. Although we have been around since 2018, we have yet to receive a call from a homeowner who has already pulled a permit. The #1 reason? They didn’t know they needed one.
Unfortunately, we have yet to come across a hot tub or spa company that notifies their customer that they need to pull a permit to put a hot tub on their property.
It is State Law in North Carolina that any pool/hot tub/spa with at least 24 inches of water be permitted and inspected to ensure 100% safety and compliance.
How Do I Pull a Permit?
Each municipality handles their permitting process a little bit differently. The good news is that it’s not as intimidating as it sounds. You’ll have to fill out the application, pay their fee and submit other required documents. Most municipalities require you to have a plot plan of where you plan to put the hot tub / spa to ensure that you are not impeding on any setbacks, property lines, septic fields / tanks, etc. For more information, we have included the link to the following municipalities with more information on their permitting process.
What If I Don’t Pull a Permit?
There are many risks involved if you don’t pull a permit. The two biggest risks relate to your homeowner’s insurance and the electrical work.
If you don’t pull a permit for your hot tub or spa, then you run the risk of installing it incorrectly or in an unsafe location. In doing so, you would accept all liability if something was to happen. If there were any issues that would result in you needing to make a claim on your homeowner’s insurance, there is a 99% chance that your insurance company would deny the claim. The reason? No permit or inspection.
The other risk relates to the electrical work. When mixing water and electricity, you want to make sure you have a licensed and insured electrician complete the work. If a licensed electrician is running the electrical to your hot tub, they will pull a permit. However, if you do not pull a permit, homeowners can hire anyone to do the electrical work. Unfortunately, it is illegal for someone to charge for electrical work if they don’t have a license.
